Term 2 Week 2

1

Welcome back to Term 2. It was a very busy start with swimming last week but the students had a great time at the pool each day. This term we will not have set oral language as there are a few interruptions (swimming, NAPLAN). It will resume again next term. Spelling has also re-commenced and students have this weeks words in their diaries. Next week The Year 3’s will do NAPLAN and we have spent this week doing practice tests and revising Exposition and Narratives for the writing part.

Hi everyone, I hope that you are enjoying your break. Just a reminder that we have swimming week 1, so don’t forget bathers, towel etc. The letter that went home during the last week has all of the information about times, changing etc, please take the time to re-read it. Can you also ensure that all of your child’s clothing is labelled as things often get lost during this week.

Hi everyone,

Well here it is almost Easter and I hope that you and your family enjoy some family time together. I have set the students a research task for the last 2 weeks of school. They have instructions stapled into their diary and took home a piece of A3 card. They need to choose an animal to find out information about and create a poster which is due to be handed up Thursday next week. The poster needs to include name of animal, scientific name, where it is found, describe its habitat, what does it eat, some interesting facts and include pictures or drawings. It should not take them long to do.                                                       Regards Gizella

Week 8

1

Hi everyone,

Our excursion to the Living Kaurna Cultural Centre occurred yesterday (Thursday) and it was a fantastic day. The students learnt so much about the Kaurna people and the Wetlands. Our guide showed us the ‘scar trees’ and the students were able to have ‘hands on’ and feel the scars on the trees. We saw a tree that was approximately 500 years old and the scar on it was estimated to be about 200 years old.  We saw the remains of ‘cooking pits’ and bushes that were/are used in bush medicine. Our guide explained about how the wetlands came about and we made our way to under the ‘expressway’ and viewed some Indigenous artwork. The students were amazed to know that we were just across the road from the ‘Macca’s” on South Road. We were extremely lucky with the weather as it was a lovely sunny day.

We had an exciting week (week 5) starting with the Taiko drum performance. It was an excellent performance and very engaging for the students, with different size and types of drums. It was also loud which added to the atmosphere. Some of the kids were able to get up and have a go on the drums as well. Much to their delight teachers also had a go ( it was great fun).

The class made stick puppets and in groups of 3 performed an Indigenous dream time story to the class. One student read the book and the other 2 performed the story. We have also been talking about the culture of the Kaurna people in preparation for our excursion on the 19th March.

Sports day is not too far away and the students know which teams they are in. There will be house meetings and practice over the next few weeks.

On Thursdays 3 primary years classes get together for combined fitness (5W, 6W and 6E). As the weather has been hot we have been doing health hustles in the pavilion. We have been learning ‘the moves’ to Nutbush, the chicken dance, the Mexican hat dance and the Macarena. They are really good dancing to ‘Nutbush”. Get your child to show you.

Thank you to all the parents/caregivers that attended acquaintance night on Tuesday. It was lovely to meet new parents and catch up with parents who now have younger sibling or have had me as a class teacher before. For those parents/caregivers who could not attend I have placed a note with all of the details that I spoke about into your child’s diary. The students have settled into the class routine very well. We started spelling this week as well as homework. It is fabulous that they are so enthused about homework. We are conducting an experiment in Science as part of our ‘What is a plant?, What does a plant need to grow?, What is the life cycle of a plant?’ enquiry. We placed some seeds into a plastic cup onto a moist paper towel and put them into a warm sunny position in the hope that they germinate.

We have also been reading a class novel as part of Literacy – The paw thing by Paul Jennings. It is about a cat called Singenpoo, a name that the students think is hilarious. Ask your child how the cat got its name and you will see them start giggling.

Hello everyone, I am very pleased to have set up a class blog for 5W. Of course it’s a work under construction, but I hope that you find it helpful. I have set up links that you can visit to see the types of things we are doing in class. I will update the blog regularly and this includes putting the weekly spelling lists into the spelling link. Please feel free to leave feedback and comments, but also read the Blog Guidelines which has a link at the top of the page.
